#98 - Pick Up Penny Candy at St. James General Store

America's oldest operational general store offers more than sweet. History buffs and lovers of knockknacks can also find goodies.

Seems like the theme for this column should stay focused on things to do when there's two feet of snow on the ground. So let's keep with that, adding in a little history when trying to keep the kids from going stir crazy.

St. James General Store is the oldest continuously operational general store in the United States, dating back to 1857 when a local trader set up the shop to peddle groceries, hardware and other items to the community.

Today, it's backed with stuff both historic and modern. Kids turn to the candy counter, which features sweets from gummi works and swedish fish to more classic treats like fudge, molasses pops, candy sticks and licorice. It's all available by the pound.

Though the store also features shelves full of knickknacks such as candles, potpourri, plates, stuffed toys, teas and other seasonal items.

Up the very narrow, and very steep steps is a top floor filled with books. Activity books and budget editions of classic literature are mixed with more focused volumes on local history and Long Island folklore.

A trip to this local landmark mixes shopping, history ... and candy. See you there.
