Main Street will have one less vacant storefront as Liberty Tattoo Company is set to take over the former Stained Glass Custom Design Showroom.

The tattoo shop, nestled between Napper Tandy's and Body + Brain Training Center at 17 East Main Street, is waiting for the final fire marshal inspection and certificate of operation to open. Jim Sanna of High End East End & Sons Construction, who did all rennovations at the location, said the shop could be open as early as next week.

The shop is owned by Dan Lavery, formerly of Cliff's Tattoo, and will feature four tattoo artists who all do piercings as well, according to Adam Lavery, brother of Dan.

With Napper Tandy's right next door, well, it's going to be an Action Place, if it isn't already.

At least it will be easy for the police, to have All of the Town's misfits in one location !

It's certainly not my first choice, but its better than an empty store, and the storefront looks nice, clean, and new.

Wow, thats amazing Dan Lavery is one the best tattoo artist on the island so glad he has his own studio his skills will surely do well in our great town. Smithtown is in my humble yet accurate opinion is defiantely heading in the correct direction. Where else can you get great sushi from Tomo and great tattos from Dan Lavery. G.F.Y

how judgemental...i'm 50% covered in tattoos almost 40 and still getting tattooed. the only difference between a tattooed person and a non tattooed person is a tattooed person does'nt care if your not. count the empty store fronts in Kp and smithtown. a empty storefront hurts the stores around them. it just compounds the local economic problems.

@Home town: I think your comparison is just as judgmental! I am ink free, however, I have absolutely nothing against people who do! In fact, I quite enjoy seeing the art on people - to see how they express themselves. I think it is fascinating to take an image and replicate it on the skin - and the portraits are quite amazing! I think watching the "Ink" shows have really broadened my horizons in showing me that people get tattooed for all sorts of reasons.

And I agree with you about it being a reputable business. This isn't some back alley place - it is right in the heart of Smithtown. God knows that there are enough empty and ugly store fronts in town and it is nice to see something OTHER than a bar, restaurant or nail salon fill the vacancy.

I wish them the best of luck!

Don't like tattoos? Don't get them! Concerned, really? A great artist able to showcase talent in a clean and respectable shop, I don't see this as the wrong direction. Definite improvement Smithtown! Two thumbs up! Good luck Dan Lavery!

I work in a shop. We don't tattoo or pierce anyone under the influence of anything. This isn't the Bowery. This isn't the underground tattooing that you saw in the City in the 70's and 80's. This industry has evolved to the point of professionalism. Walk into a shop. Look around. Yes, we may look rough and tumble. However we are people. Normal everyday people. We have just chosen a profession that allows us a n outlet for our art in a safe and sterile environment. It's this kind of closed minded statement that perpetuates the stereotype of us as bad people. Look around, doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, professionals, ceo's, a lot of them have tattoos. If they tattoo or pierce a minor or an intoxicated person, THEN go after them. But until them. Let them prove you wrong. You might be surprised...

I think the community will be very pleased with the addition of Liberty Tattoo to their town. Dan Lavery is highly professional and regarded as one of the best in the business. With that said, I believe that he will bring great success to the town which is the collective goal.

Tammy your right, I don't know dan or his work but it's a fact that a business that's doing well will help bring more people to the neighboring stores. Empty storefronts only hurt the other shops around which in turn creates more empty storefronts. Good luck to dan and his venture.

All the best Danny Boy! Dan is an incredible tattooer and an incredible person, husband to his wife, and father to his children. As far as the shop being bad for the town...grow up. Especially since tattooing has become moreof a fashion than a lifestyle (a change I, personally, am not a fan of...I liked it more when rebels were tattooed, and a tattoo was an eagle, not a music note behind the ear)..all it could possibly do would be draw more people to the area. People that probably already live there or close by. More foot traffic equals more dollars. As far as drunks getting tattooed....I've witnessed Dan turn down pieces on clients who were drunk. He takes pride in his work, and it shows. I wish nothing but success for Dan and Liberty

Is that the one that is no longer there on Route 25A and Radio Avenue ?

Eventually a small bar became a tenant, which did Nothing to clean up the "strip mall"...the usual, Permanent Debris...various types of garbage, Graffitti, and the usual "human debris" that is "hanging out" all hours, especially the very late, early morning hours ! A person sitting on the back of a 4X4 with a "bag drink" just adds to the...ahem...flavor of the neighborhood !

Once, there was a group of some 20 early morning "revelers" and even the Suffolk County Police didn't want to stop and break it up !

The "Verizon Store" has moved out, and neighbors are awaiting one of those "massage parlors" next ! That's All that's missing !

Wow! Bill how did you get into the library so earphone Sunday for your Internet access? Your just a sad little man, and I use the word man loosely. I'm sure your just a divorced loser and your kids no longer speak to you, and your ex wife ran off with the local landscaper. So I'm glad you get a little pleasure out of replying to a thread about a new tattoo shop opening up in town. Glad to see that on top of your insults you can offer the rest of the community good viable options forALL or anyofthe empty storefronts in town. So is it BILL or is it WALTER? Such a pathetic week minded loser you are. Now go grab your bottle of gin and take your morning nap. Good luck dan with your shop. I dont know you but I intend to stop buy and support a local business. If for nothing else, just to help keep you in business and in turn piss off losers like WALLY and BILL.

Those in Santa Clara CA have certain feelings about these establishments...

WHEREAS, in 1997, the City of Santa Clara Police Department conducted
a study on secondary effects of crime from regulated businesses, which include tattoo and/or body piercing shops, and concluded that these shops can be a magnet for organized crime, gang activity, loitering, and increased police calls. The study is on file in the office of the Signal Hill Community Development Department; and

WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clara found that uses such as tattoo and/or
body piercing shops can have a detrimental impact individually or when located in close proximity to each other, can create a “skid row” atmosphere and have a deleterious effect upon adjacent areas; and

On the positive side - it is good that there is a business moving in and not out on Main St. So sad to see how our town is turning out when you drive down Main St. Sign of the times!
