Local Market To Open This Fall

Temple Beth Sholom sponsors unique fundraising project.

An open space market will premier on the Temple Beth Sholom grounds this fall.

"We were looking for ways to raise money and thought this would be a great way to bring the synagogue community and Smithtown community together," said Robert Kronrad, a member of the temple overseeing the fundraising project.

The market, tentatively titled "The River Road Market," will feature fresh produce, crafts, candy, antiques, memorabilia and clothing, among other products, and will take place every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The market will be year round, since the temple has reserved both outside grounds and indoor ballroom space for vendors.

Deb Skroce, who has run a market in the East Village for years, has been hired to staff and oversee the market. She is currently building the vendor list.

"Around 20 interested vendors have already responded," she said. "Our goal is to have around 50 vendors each week."

The temple is charging vendors $50 for ten foot by ten foot spaces. In addition to the vendors, Conrad and Skroce also plan on inviting different community groups to table free of charge at the market.  They will also hold charity events, like blood drives, in conjunction with the market.

The money raised by the market will go to the Temple's general operating budget and towards funding the religious school, Kronrad said.

The market is scheduled to open Sept. 19.
