Plastic Disks Still Being Found on Local Beaches

The litte plastic wagon wheels come from a 2011 accident where a Westchester wastewater treatment plant released them into the Long Island Sound.

More than two years after a Westchester County wastewater treatment plant in Mamaroneck, N.Y., accidentally released thousands of small plastic disks into the Long Island Sound, they are still popping up on local beaches.

The photo above was taken at Smithtown's Short Beach last week.

In March 2011, residents in waterside communities on Long Island started to panic over where theses small, plastic wagon wheel disks had come from. Days later, locals learned that the disks, which are normally used to clean wastewater by removing nitrogen, escaped from an aeration tank that was under construction at the plant.

At the time, the Suffolk County Department of Health said they posed no risk, though advised people to wear gloves if they were going to pick them up.
