Review: Feel-Good Food and Friendly Service at Old Street

Restaurant serves traditional American food and small-town atmosphere.

Old Street Restaurant and Bar has a distinct authenticity, a classic small-town charm that is difficult to replicate.

Guests enter the establishment and are greeted by a deep mahogany wood bar that shines and stretches far into the back of the space. Diners are given the choice of dining in the restaurant, at booths in the rear of the bar area or at the bar itself.

The atmosphere is subdued and cheerful, filled with regulars. People line the bar throughout the day, absorbed in deep discussion, while other groups dine in the restaurant.

The menu is thick with traditional American foods. Greasy, fried favorites are listed among some more unique items, like Spicy Shrimp Avocado ($8.95).

Starter options range from seafood platters, like a Seafood Sampler (baked clams, fried shrimp and Maryland crab cake for $13.95) and Fried Calamari ($8.95) to Pierogies ($5.95) and Wing Zingers ($6.95).

We chose the French Onion Soup Au Gratin ($4.95) and the Tasty Treats Sampler ($10.95), which included mozzarella sticks, stuffed skins, onion rings and chicken tenders. The cheese on the French onion soup was slightly burnt but plentiful, spilling over the sides of the crock. The sampler was served warm and was a good combination of feel-good food, perfect to share as a late-night snack or before a meal.

The restaurant's entrée options are divided between salads, "The Butcher Block," "Dock Side," chicken, pasta, "The Sandwich Shop," wraps, "NY Deli Counter," burgers and omelets.

The Crispy Chicken Salad ($11.95), had bite sized morsels of crispy chicken tenders with tomato, red onion, crispy bacon, egg and shredded Cheddar cheese over mixed greens in honey mustard dressing.  The portion was huge and all the ingredients were fresh.

The Cowboy Burger ($12.95) was piled high with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bacon and Monterey Jack cheese and was served with thick french fries.  The burger was well-cooked and the long list of burger varieties available clearly indicated that this is the Old Street's fine point.

The feel-good food partnered with great, friendly service. Old Street is open Monday - Wednesday and Sunday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. - midnight.  All major credit cards are accepted.
