Smithtown and Kings Park Library Renovations Near Completion
Kings Park and Smithtown branches expected to wrap up renovations by late spring.
Renovations at the Smithtown and Kings Park branches of the Smithtown Special Library District are expected to be completed some time at the end of April, according to a report on the Times of Smithtown.
In March of 2008, residents approved a $21 million plan to modernize and renovate the existing library buildings and convert the abandoned Nesconset Armory building into a permanent Nesconset Branch, which also houses the library district’s offices. The Smithtown branch closed last July and Kings Park in April of last year, to begin renovations.
According to the report, 3,000 square feet of the Kings Park branch will be remodeled adding storage space in the basement as well as a children’s room.
The Smithtown branch will have a 6,000-square-foot addition, much of which will be for a community room and a historical Long Island collection to be housed the basement. A children's room has also been added.
All buildings within the library district are now LEED certified with energy efficient lights and windows and are eligible for LIPA rebates.
The Commack and Nesconset branches re-opened in April and July of 2011 respectively.

I am not personally aware of the situation, but often to make projects cost less projects are stretched over time, ironically this makes the project cost less from the contractor. Also LEED certification adds time and costs to any project, but are supposed to pay off through usage and lesser energy bills

Visit the Library website and look at some of the pictures and updates. They are completely remodelling these buildings inside and out.

Why can't the Smithtown Library be member supported? Why not privatize the Library? If not, I say cut the library budget from 12+ million to less than $2 Million start the process next year engage the media, board meetings, mass mailings.... Instead ofpaying taxes to support this old book repository buy an ipad.

Matt, I have commented before about the library. It is so much more than a book repository. Libraries have evolved from those "shush places" with dusty old shelves and worn books to centers filled with innovation, energy, information via many venues and programing. It is a place where everyone has a place. It also is a system where all the town's citizens have a say because we can directly vote budgets up or down. The library also has monthly public meetings where your voice can be heard. Perhaps there are things offered at the library that even YOU would enjoy.

I like Matt's idea. Privatize.
When I drive past the library in smithtown being renovated, I am shocked to see the pella stickers all over the windows. The most expensive window on the market. Would andersens not have been good enough? Who the heck decoded on pella? I bet the majority of homes in smithtown don't have pella windows. Total extravagance to benefit few .
