Guide to Local Labor Day Activities

Take advantage of these local outdoor activities.

Make the most of this sunny, 75+ degree day before school starts tomorrow with these activities around Smithtown.

Stump Pond:

The pond, located in is home to many outdoor activity options. All take place near or around historic district buildings within the park.  Visitors can hike, picnic, freshwater fish, rent rowboats and enjoy the playground and dog run. Tours of the historic area are offered daily. A 5-mile hiking trail begins at the Long Island Greenbelt Trail office at the north end of Blydenburgh and winds around the 164-acre pond.

Smithtown Landing Pool:

Cool off from the sun one last time this summer at the Smithtown pool, open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.  Without a seasonal pass, admission is $3 for children and $4 for adults.

Long Beach/Short Beach:

These North Shore beaches feature boat ramps, marinas, fishing areas, sailing and motorboat opportunities, windsurf lessons, playgrounds and food stands. Lifeguards are on duty 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Kayaking:

Kayak five miles down the beautiful Nissequogue River. Trips start from Paul T. Given Park across from the Smithtown Bull on Rt. 25 and end at the Kings Park Bluff. Rentals available from Bob's Canoe and Nissequogue River Rentals.

Fresh Produce/Plants:

Visit the farm stands along N. Country Road/25A to purchase locally grown summer products. BB & GG Farm has all types of fresh produce, like tomatoes and corn, and Hitherbrook Nursery offers beautiful summer plants.

Sweetbriar Nature Center:

This Smithtown jewel is located on 54 acres of garden, woodland, field and wetland habitats on the Nissequogue River, and gives residents opportunities to engage in native wildlife rehabilitation. The center also provides natural science education to Long Island residents of all ages. The center has a butterfly house and rainforest room. Stony Brook Village:

Take a short drive up to Stony Brook, where village stores are celebrating Labor Day by offering great discounts.
