What Was the Town Like When You Were a Kid?
With Twitter trending #BackWhenIWasAKid, we'd like to know about your experiences growing up locally.
It's time to reminisce.
Twitter is great for starting some great, random conversations with its trending topics, and for Wednesday a popular topic trending is #BackWhenIWasAKid.
Many of the responses from Twitter folk are sure to crack a smile. Here are a few (not necessarily from Smithtown residents):
*"@hellojohnna: #backwheniwasakid I use to play hide and seek, play nintendo64, make forts and laugh at everything. I basically do the same now"
*"@BieberLiveLaugh: #backwheniwasakid you put the tv on channel 3 to play video games"
*"@lwimann: #backwheniwasakid scooby doo was where it was at #nothingbetter"
*"@YariNicole: #backwheniwasakid my mom use to dress me and my sister up exactly the same but sometimes different colors"
While saying "back when I was a kid" might seem to imply an older demographic of Smithtown residents this question is open to everyone, old and young.
So, what was it like growing up in the town? Let's talk about it in the comments.

Back when I was a kid the streets we blue stone, not paved. We would go to one of our neighbor's house's, Mrs Quackenbush (real name) and she would always have some candy for us. She must have been 75 years old but we would sit on the porch with her and chat. She was the sweetest woman !! that was the mid 1960's.

You could ride your bike into town to get an ice cream without fear of getting hit by a car.

Peter, do you ever write a story or just ask questions for Patch readers and have them do all the writing for you?

My father used to own a restaurant & bar on main street called "Peppermills." During the summer, I would stay there all day eating french toast. Peppermills also had the best lobster bisque. For the last 10+ years I have tried to find another lobster bisque that could compare - none have. Also at that time, the Smithtown theater had $2 movies. Of course you could see them on home video by the time they came out, but it was great to see a newer movie in a theater for so cheap!

I remember when there was a Grant's Department store located at the site of the future LA Fitness in the Branch Shopping Center. Across the street where H&R Block stands was Lynn's Shell Station. Hard to believe that so many cars came in and out of there all day but traffic was a lot less busy in those days....FB

Camile, Grant's was definitely where the future LA fitness is being built. In the shopping center where Ace Hardware stands there was a Bohack at the far east corner and an A&P at the far west corner of that shopping center, of course these were in the days before the Uncle Giuseppe's (formerly Waldbaum's) shopping center was built on Rte 111.

TY...Frank .. I also remember Food Fair on the left side of shopping center .After Childworld and Olympic Gym closed , moved there.. When FF closed, Pathmark took over then Walbaums ... I know there was a small supermarket in the JC Penny shopping center the strip of stores to left, where the new Japanese restaurant, bagel and Starbucks are today.. Remember , I only go back to 1981..but I have seen many changes...sadly . There were reasons why I moved to area , most are gone ..

I remember travelling to Childworld as a kid and always looking forward to seeing the new toys. I lived by a Toy's R Us but there was something more at Childworld. My husband remembers more of the history of the town, the candy store, being able to cross main safely, and working as a teen at Aid Auto Store.
