Why is This Park So Dirty?

Paul T. Given Park, a refuge for local trout fisherman, is rife with graffiti and litter.

While the warm winter weather might put you in the mood for a hike in one of the area's many parks, don't expect pristine beauty at the Paul T. Given County Park in Smithtown.

The parkland tucked along Route 25 is most often used as a canoe or kayak launch for exploring the Nissequogue river, a family picnic spot or a quiet getaway for locals hoping to bag a trout in the shallow creek.

But with the leaves gone and grasses brown the park's problems stick out like brightly colored aluminum cans. Trash hides in bushes and along the trails, the train trestle is covered in graffiti, a toppled utility pole and wires hang over one area, chunks of asphalt stick out of the water and rusty poles and other metal line the walk. See our gallery for photos.

Patch will be following up with the county about what can be done about the state of the park, so let us know if there is anything you'd like us to ask.

At the same time, we wonder if the community would want to join us in a scheduled park clean-up. Email henry@patch.com if you'd be interested. At the least a few people with trash bags can make a marked difference in the appearance of the park.

Unfortunately, covering up the graffiti will just cause more delinquents to do it over again. As far as the trash is concerned, I am surprised that the town has let it get that bad. Clearly, no upkeep has been done in that park for some time.

I did mention it above, but we should note this park is managed by the county, not the town.

I like the idea of organizing a clean up of the park. Those who use it regularly should be the first to volunteer. Yes, I know, you are not the one who litter! And please, stop asking the government to do everything for you, if you can do it yourself, you should!

Sadly, many areas of our Town are starting to look like this. Counted 18 Tiger Shulmann advertising signs tacked to poles along Town Line Road yesterday. Isn't there a law on the books that prohibits commercial entities from littering our streets? If so, let's enforce it. And all those folks we read about in the crime blotter each each week? How about we bring back the idea of community service for those who are convicted and put them to work enhancing our community?

i love comments like this. look at your tax bill and see what percentage goes to the town parks and beaches and county parks. then take a look at what percentage goes to schools....over 70%. you should channel some of that energy over at a school board and or budget meeting.

The obvious question is - where is the police when someone is ON TOP of the trestle painting the graffitti?? If we had more police presence even our park rangers, I think we would see less of this. WE can clean it up, but the kids will put it back.
More needs to be done to show that police are driving by.

Getting a great list of people interested. I will keep you all posted. I plan to talk with the county first about what we are allowed to do, etc. and update everyone. Nice to connect with so many people who care about their community.

First, to ask where the police are relative to the painting of graffiti.....well, let's just say that we don't have enough money to enough police/rangers to watch every part of every park.

Second, I too have noticed that Tiger Schulmann is out of control with his signs on every pole in Nesconset (and elsewhere). And because he gets away with it, others have joined him in trashing the poles with their signs. I'm going to call Supervisor Vecchio's office today and find out who had jurisdiction but I'm willing to bet that since the poles are owned by LIPA, the town will not have jurisdiction. I'll post when I find out.

I just got off the phone with the Department of Public Safety who has jurisdiction in the matter of signs on poles (glad it is not LIPA!). They claim they are aware of the issue and do have department personnel taking down signs and that there is a fine for posting signs on poles. I have sent them an email reiterating the contents of my phone call and have copied Councilman Creighton, who has jurisdiction over that department. Here is the email:

I called your office today and spoke with a very nice gentleman who was a Park Ranger and helping out on the phones. My call was about the ubiquitous Tiger Schulmann signs that continually deface the poles here in Nesconset (and elsewhere in the town). Today, I counted 18 of his signs on Townline road. Disgusting!

I understand personnel in your department pull down signs and reportedly there is a fine for posting such signs. Apparently he is putting them up just as fast as you are removing them and if he is being fined, it must be irrelevant to him; perhaps the fine is too small?

I urge you to remove all of his signs and notify him in writing that this behavior will not be tolerated. Additionally, fine him for each and every sign that he puts up. This also applies to the others who post their signs on the poles also.

Thanks in advance for handling this matter.

Last summer I had a garage sale. I put up a few signs on utility poles late on Friday night. Monday morning at 9AM a representative from the Department of Public Safety rang my door bell and told me I needed to remove the signs immediately and I did! I suppose I should be grateful for not being given a ticket. But my obvious question is why do so many businesses manage to put up and keep their signs for so long? Is the Department of Public Safety ringing THEIR door bell at 9 o'clock in the morning?
