Suffolk Notebook: IDA Hopes Incentives Will Keep Broadridge

Pols hope the cost savings will keep the company from taking its 1,600 jobs off Island.

Hoping to prevent the loss of 1,600 jobs on Long Island, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday floated an incentive package worth millions to Broadridge Financial — a public company that has threatened to move off-Island if officials didn’t find a way to help it trim costs. If the financial services company takes the offer — which its board will decide on in June — then it'll come as a disappointment to officials in New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Ohio and Texas who were trying to woo the $2.2 billion company into moving to their states. The Suffolk IDA said the incentive deal includes sales tax exemptions on $75 million in equipment purchases related to its renovation of its two Edgewood buildings, as well as a 15-…

Blight Hides Behind Bamboo on Edgewood [Empty in Smithtown]

Town hopes property will one day be cleaned up.

While the historic Ebo Hill property on Edgewood Avenue in Smithtown is easily the most recognized abandoned eyesore on that roadway, there's another you might have missed. Shielded from the road by towering bamboo sits 436 Edgewood Avenue, a small ranch house that has been left to decay in the neighborhood. Boards are rotted, trees have fallen on the house and an old motor boat sits on cinder blocks on the cracked asphalt driveway. Last owned by the Church of the Gospel Ministry, the house now been targeted by the Town of Smithtown for remediation once the town drafts an official plan for dealing with the host of ramshackle properties in the area. The vandalized former trucking facility behind the Smithtown Long Island Rail Road Station …

Campaigns Trade Barbs as Altschuler Pitches Jobs Plan

Bishop campaign fires back after being knocked around at Altschuler press conference in Southampton.

Standing in front of an empty storefront on County Road 39 in Southampton, his opponent's hometown, congressional candidate Randy Altschuler explained Monday why he is again challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop after a narrow defeat two years ago. “I decided to seek a rematch with Congressman Bishop this year because many of the problems that spurred me to run in 2010 still exist,” said Altschuler, R-St. James. “In fact, they’ve gotten worse.” Altschuler was there to present his "10-Point Jobs Plan for Long Island," an addition to his campaign that he didn't have in 2010. He envisions Suffolk County becoming the Silicon Valley of the East Coast.  Altschuler’s plan calls for: Altschuler also says he will form a small business advisory…

Poll: Would You Pay $12 a Year for Better Roads?

Town of Smithtown government has been criticized for letting its roadways crumble while a $10 million plan to save them lingers without a vote.

Many Town of Smithtown residents have come to Patch, complaining about the horrible shape the roadways are in. They are divided over who to point the finger at, and what to do about it.  Patch reported Wednesday that Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio received heated criticism from Desmond Ryan, executive director of the Association for a Better Long Island, for his failure to maintain the town's roadways. Desmond went as far as to say Vecchio would be dead before residents would see any improvement in the roadway, and only then recognize how bad off the town's roads truly area.  His remarked were based on Vecchio's public statement he will not approve of borrowing $10 million over the next two years to help repave more than 120 miles of…

Altschuler Will Unveil Jobs Plan in Bishop's Backyard

Congressional challenger is coming to Southampton on Monday.

In three successive press conferences on Monday, Republican congressional candidate Randy Altschuler plans to roll out his jobs plan, starting with a 9 a.m. conference in Southampton — the hometown of Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop. The kick-off will be at the 819 County Road 39 shopping center, with East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson, Southampton Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi and members of the Southampton Business Alliance, according to a statement from the Altschuler campaign. "The 10-point plan addresses the economy and how to bring business and jobs back to Long Island and the First Congressional District," said Diana Weir, Altschuler's campaign manager. "It's a comprehensive solution-based program." “Long Island’s …
