Still Time For Summer!

We still have time for summer! That means more time to grill and BBQ with family and friends. Read on for some tips to keep it healthy!

Some healthy tips for you to still enjoy summer BBQs!

Tip 1: Veg Out! Load up on veggies before your go for the grilled meats!  You'll not only get a healthy, low calories dose of antioxidants, but you'll be less likely to overeat the higher calorie foods.  Make it easy and grill your veggies in aluminum foil along with your meats.

Tip 2: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink a large glass of water before your meal and it will slow you down and reduce your calorie intake.  Drinking water throughout the day will also avoid dehydration which zaps your energy level and sends false hunger signals.

Tip 3: Bring Your Own  If you are a guest, offer to bring a dish to share with everyone.  Make it healthy!  If you don't like to cook, bring a vegetable tray to help you with Tip 1!

Tip 4: Be the DD Cold beers and cocktails go down easily on a summer day.  Avoiding alcohol reduces calories and carbs.  If you are indulging, drink water inbetween drinks to slow you down and reduce the calories and carbs.  Also balance your carb intake by eating a few extra bites of protein for each drink.

Tip 5:  Use Your Hands!  Your hands can help you determine portions. 

  • Size of your hand: Carbs, complex carbs that is such as whole grain buns, whole wheat choices, brown rice etc
  • Size of palm: Protein including chicken, turkey, fish, beef, cheese, and tofu
  • Size of thumb: Fats including nuts, oil, and avocado

Tip 6: Think Fish Add fish such as salmon fillets or tuna steaks to your menu for a healthy option to burgers and hot dogs.  Fish provide heart healthy omega 3s (good for you fats) and are lower in calories.
