100 Things to Do in Smithtown: #82 - Row Boating and Fishing at Stump Pond

Blydenburgh County Park gives Suffolk County residents and their guests the opportunity to rent boats for rowing or freshwater fishing along Stump Pond.

Blydenburgh Lake, also called Stump Pond, is located within Blydenburgh County Park on Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown. At the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, the lake is popular for its picturesque scenery while row boating and freshwater fishing.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day the park offers boat rentals at their southern entrance. Fishing for pumpkinseed sunfish, large-mouth bass, perch and bluegill is permitted between sunrise and sunset, according to the park’s website. New York State freshwater fishing laws apply.

This 627 acre park is open year-round to Suffolk County residents and features a variety of activities including camping, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking as well as a playground and a fenced-in dog run.

Hiking through the park is led on a regularly by the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, whose headquarters is located in one of the historic district houses.

Horseback riding permits are required and must be visibly displayed.

The park also offers camper parking at the northern entrance (New Mill Road).

Price: Admission on weekdays is free, $3 per car with Suffolk’s Green Key Pass or $8 without on weekends.
