Deepwells Cancels Annual Fall Festival, Haunted House

Ongoing construction to install fire suppression systems in historical buildings creates a safety hazard.

This Halloween, things might be a little less spooky in St. James.

Deepwells Farm Historical Society Board has cancelled its annual Halloween Haunted House and Fall Festival traditionally held on Columbus Day weekend in St. James.

Scott Posner, president of Deepwells Farm Historical Society, sent an email out to members stating the festivities must be cancelled due to Suffolk County's Department of Public Works ongoing construction to install a state-of-the-area fire suppression system in the buildings.

"We had hoped it would be done in time for the Fall Festival and Haunted House. Unfortunately when you open up the walls of a very old home surprises are sure to arise," said Posner in his email.

The annual event featured games, hay rides, pumpkin painting and a Haunted House with free admission for local resident. The ongoing construction involves digging trenches outside the house to place water tanks creates a safety hazard to the public.

Posner promised Deepwells Historical Society plans to revive these traditions next year.

"The Fall Festival and Haunted House will be back, better and BIGGER than ever next year. On behalf of the Deepwells Farm Historical Society Board we want to thank you all for your continued patience and unwavering support," he wrote.

St. James Chamber of Commerce and the Deepwells Historical Society said they expect at this time to host the annual holiday festivities, including the Christmas Tree Lighting, scheduled for Dec. 7 at 4 p.m.
