Local Chiropractors Collect Food for LI Cares

Smithtown chiropractor Rick Block, along with his brother Jeff, aim to make a difference by exchanging services for food donations.

Brothers Rick and Jeff Block, chiropractors in Smithtown and Selden, respectively, decided it was time to roll up their sleeves and help the hungry on Long Island.

It wasn’t enough to just ask people to donate cans of food – they wanted to get enough food try to make a difference.

“To get more people to donate, we decided to donate our own services in exchange for the food,” Jeff said. “If people donated a can of food, they would receive a free new patient’s exam that they could give to maybe a family member or a friend.”

They also got MRI companies Zwanger Pesiri and Islandia MRI to donate their services as well. And the brothers purchased a new iPod Touch to give to one lucky winner.

Jeff said that originally he donated food to five churches in Smithtown, but he found it difficult to get the food to them, as they weren’t open a lot of hours. He then found Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. LI Cares is Long Island’s first food bank, founded in 1980 by the late singer Harry Chapin.

“They make it very easy to donate food,” Jeff said. “They drop off bins and then pick up the food for us when we’ve collected it all.”
