Mom's Talk Q&A: How to Thwart Bullying in Schools

Our first ever Mom's Talk will tackle the issue of bullying in schools, methods to rid schools of this issue and more.

Welcome to the first Mom's Talk on Smithtown Patch, a new feature on that is part of a new initiative on our Patch sites to reach out to moms and families. Our first Mom’s Talk question(s) is, “Is bullying a new issue in schools or has it been prevalent but ignored and is there a difference between kids picking on each other and bullying? Also, what responsibilities do parents and schools have to thwart this issue?”

While this issue has received attention in schools within the Smithtown Central School District, it hit a mainstream level recently when Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson made an appearance on “The View” to congratulate a boy who stood up to seven bullies that made fun of him for his mothers heritage, being small and more, and allowed his situation to become public so others can see what a problem bullying is today.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, concerns and more in our comment section and stop by Smithtown Patch next Wednesday at 2 p.m. for our next Mom's Talk discussion.
