Mulcahy's in Wantagh Hosts DDI's Annual Rockin' for Autism Fundraiser

Music benefit held at Wantagh venue for Smithtown-based Developmental Disabilities Institute.

The sixth annual Rockin' for Autism fundraiser to benefit the Smithtown-based Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) was held at Wantagh's Mulcahy's Pub & Concert Hall on Sunday.

Since the first Rockin' for Autism benefit for DDI six years ago, more than $100,000 has been raised for the not-for-profit organization. Organizers said funds raised at Sunday's event will go toward educational programs for children with autism.

Rockin' for Autism's chairman is Massapequa resident Jim Cronin, who along with other DDI members founded the fundraising event six years ago.

"I'm a father of two autistic children Sean and Sheila," Cronin said. "Although they don't go to DDI, I recognize all that DDI does for all children and adults with autism and people with developmental disabilities. These children need to have a voice to promote their needs and services that DDI provides. I am a small part of Rockin' for Autism from running this event."

The four bands who took the Mulcahy's stage at the benefit included 1 Step Ahead, Just Cause, The Cold Spring Harbor Band, and Dr. G's All Star Veteran Band. There also DDI sweatshirts sold along with raffles.

Dan Rowlan, director for development at DDI, stated "I would like to thank Jim Cronin, chairman of the event and the Cronin family who have organized this event for the past six years and Steve Aliano, music director for the event for being able to have all four bands play for free."

The event featured many volunteers at DDI including Amanda Akbar, who has worked with the agency the past four years and said, "There's a lot of people here and this is amazing all the support we are getting."
