Nesconset Brings in Holiday Season with Tree Lighting

The 21st annual tree lighting ceremony was presented by the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce.

Local residents didn't have to travel into New York City to get a glimpse of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Instead, they watched the Nesconset Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Nesconset Plaza on Smithtown Blvd. on Sunday.

This was the 21st annual ceremony held by the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce. As tradition, attendees were encouraged to bring food items, canned goods and paper goods.

"The canned goods and other food items go to needy families provided to the Chamber by Holy Cross Church," said Chamber member Fred Kusterbeck. "The Chamber adds to whatever is collected and makes up food baskets to give to 15 to 20 families."

Parents were invited to bring their children to meet Santa Claus, who gave out goodie bags and 15 bicycles, along with gift cards and other presents from local merchants.

"The bikes are raffled. Each child gets a free raffle ticket as they enter. Only children get tickets, no adults," Kusterbeck said. "Along with the bikes, we also raffle gift cards and gift certificates from local merchants. Chamber members and local merchants provide gifts, bikes, gift cards, etc."

One child, Casey Kuhner, won a $10 gift certificate from Dollar Deals, a free dozen bagels from Nesconset Bagel Café and a free pizza from Little Vincent's Pizza.

"Casey won a bike last year, but it was a woman's bike. This year is only kids' bikes, which is smart being the kids are the only ones that get the tickets," Casey's father, Mr. Kuhner, said.

Over the years, Chamber members have donated their time and energy to make this a successful event for the community.

"Steve Gargiulo, President of the Chamber, Lou Scotti, Al Hornberger and me are responsible for its success, along with the rest of the board of directors and the Chamber members who help out with donations and volunteering," Kusterbeck said.
