New Course Record Set at Smithtown's 5K Running of the Bulls

Nearly 400 runners took to downtown Smithtown's streets on Saturday.

If you blinked, you might have missed the top runners in the Saturday's 5K Running of the Bulls.

Sunny skies and mild temperatures provided the perfect conditions for record-breaking pace at the Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce's 8th annual 5K Running of the Bulls on Saturday.

Smithtown resident Tom Flynn, 20, came in first place with a new course record of 16 minutes and 45 seconds. Over the 5K race, or 3.1 miles, he averaged one mile every 5 minutes and 24 seconds.

Leading the women was Kathleen Callahan, 46, of East Northport, who finished in 19 minutes and 41.9 seconds. Callahan came in 13th place out of 375 timed runners.

Start2Finish provided the timing chips and kept track of the results for Saturday's race. The full results can be found on Start2Finish's website, click here, listed by overall finish, awards, age groups or searched by name, age and town.

The hundreds of runners who lined up in front of New York Avenue School on Saturday ranged from age 7 to 94. Many local families gathered together, encouraging one another as they ran.  Young children and their parents participated in the 1K fun run held immediately before the main event.

The annual event benefits  the Courtney Sipes Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization in memory of a Smithtown girl and Pines Elementary School student who was killed in a accident on Smithtown Main Street in November 2009. The charity provides scholarships and opportunities for children looking to pursue interests in the arts and music.

Proceeds will also be donated to Hauppauge-based Angela's house, a nonprofit that helps aid medically frail children and their families obtain needed care and services.
