Pumpkin Picking Season Hits Full Swing in Smithtown

Looking for a place to find a pumpkin for Halloween? Smithtown Moms has a few suggestions.

Pumpkin season is reaching its peak in Smithtown. 

Cooler temperature and the changing of the leaves signals that Halloween is drawing near. It's time to begin the hunt for the perfect pumpkin to turn into a spooky jack-o-lantern for Halloween night. 

Where can you find the best pumpkins in or near Smithtown? Smithtown Moms, a website hosted for parents in Town of Smithtown to gather and share local information, offered these suggestions mixed with a few of our own. 

Here's our list of places to hunt for the perfect pumpkin: 

  • Benner's Farm in East Setauket
    This 55-acre homestead offers u-pick pumpkins on weekends in October along with a haunted hay ride and petting zoo full of animals including ponies, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, and rabbits. 

  • Borella's Farm Stand in St. James
    The Borella's Farm Stand celebrates is harvest festival every weekend in October featuring pumpkins, both lined up and u-pick, hayrides, a two-acre corn maze and activities for the children. The farm stand has local, fresh produce as well as home-baked goods and Halloween decorations. 
  • Elwood Pumpkin Patch in Huntington
    A working farm that serves as Long Island's western most pumpkin patch, making it the closest pumpkin picking spot to New York City. There are hay rides and a corn maze for children. 
  • F&W Schmitt's Farmily Farm in Melville
    This family-owned farm offers pre-picked pumpkin patch that's arranged by size. It makes it easy to find a pumpkin just the size for you, your child or the family's project. They also offer hay rides, a corn maze, a playground and pony rides. For teens and adults, there's a haunted house and corn maze after dark. 

  • Kings Park United Methodist Church in Kings Park 
    Each October, Lucien Memorial United Methodist Church's yard becomes a massive pumpkin patch with pre-picked pumpkins set out for you to wander among as part of an annual fundraiser. 

  • Wicks Nursery & Greenhouse in St. James
    This locally-owned farm on Route 25A is best known for Winnie the Witch, a 30-foot tall witch who towers over the farm's pumpkin patch. For your entertainment, there's a haunted house, hayrides, pony rides, a feeding and petting zoo and balloon bouncers for the kids.
