Smithtown Remembers: What Do You Remember Most on 9/11?

Paying tribute to the Sept. 11 attacks and those who died both during and afterwards.

This Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people.

The Town of Smithtown has a Sept. 11 Memorial located off Main Street dedicated to the 53 members of the community who lost their lives that day. Steel from the towers and plaques bearing the names of those lost were placed within the garden and in front of a cascading fountain.

The memorial was made possible by local government officials, corporations, individuals and the Chamber of Commerce. The Town of Smithtown Parks Department maintains the flowers in the memorial.

Since the attacks, the Smithtown community - including Head of the Harbor, Nesconset and St. James - has continued to lose loved ones who served as first responders during the attacks.

Nesconset's 9/11 Responders Remembered memorial pays tribute to all those who have died years after the attacks, as result of illnesses resulting from time at Ground Zero and the cleanup.

Tell us, Who or What do you remember most on Sept. 11? How do you remember those loved ones who died?
