Smithtown's Most Dangerous Cut-Throughs?

What residential streets have become virtual busy highways for people taking shortcuts?

Some residential streets can feel like busy highways if they're often used as cut-throughs, and can pose a danger to unsuspecting pedestrians. In Smithtown, Edgewood Avenue might be the most notorious shortcut, though we're sure many in St. James will nominate their streets as cut-throughs between Lake and Moriches Avenues or Woodlawn Avenue and Middle Country Road.

What do you think are some of the most highly used and least appropriate cut through streets in Smithtown and the surrounding area? What threats do they pose and how do you think traffic could be better managed or avoided?

Tell us in the comments.

Southern Blvd. in Nesconset. Since they removed the hills between 347 & Middle Country Road, the entire road from Townline to Middle Country now has constant 18 wheel trucks flying through all day. Despite complaints from residents, the town does nothing. Maybe when one of the middle school kids gets hit ...

Not as busy as Southern, but Lancaster Avenue in Nesconset is simply dangerous. We're one street over from Lake Ave. off Smithtown Blvd and cars tear down Lancaster in order to avoid the traffic signal on Lake and Smithtown. The number of homes on Lancaster with small children has increased in the 9 years since we moved in and there are no sidewalks along with many cars parked in the street. Where are the kids supposed to walk? And relying on anyone to stop at the stop sign in the middle of Lancaster is a death wish, they almost make things more dangerous. The town has been contacted repeatedly and repeatedly we're blown off. A lot of family foot traffic has increased due to Ralph's ices being located at the end of the street (also relayed to the town), I hope it doesn't take a tragedy for someone to finally take some action.

Mt. Pleasant Rd. between 347 and Main St. Many cars go through every stop sign on the street. Commercial trucks also speed even though there are no through commercial traffic signs.

Northern Boulevard between Woodlawn and Rosevale. I've never seen so many people blow through stop signs without even slowing down.

Bridle Path Road--off of Landing Avenue. Would be considerate if people would drive more slowly down this residential street. It is used as a cut through to avoid overly congested Main Street, Smithtown. Not only do they speed--they litter! Imagine we live amongst people who are so inconsiderate. yukk!

Galahad Ln & Prince Charming between Browns Rd and Gibbs Pond. Cars needing to go south on Gibbs turn left off of westbound 347 to avoid teh red arrow at gibbs. Then they cut through Galahad and Prince Charming to get back to Gibbs. The cars go entirely too fast through the neighborhood. Their are many young children that live on these blocks. Too make matters worse, the stop sign at gibbs and prince charming is routinely ignored. Cars just slow down and go right through it even as cars are stopped to turn.

Burgundy Lane between Southern Blvd. and Lake Ave. has become a well used shortcut to Rt. 347 because you can no longer make a right on red at the intersection of Southern Blvd. and Rt. 347. How about not allowing a right on red at Lake Avenue and Rt 347 as well to curb some of this traffic. Burgundy Lane is a winding narrow residential road and it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. People on Burgundy Lane find it difficult exiting their driveways. Cars using this shortcut speed through this street ignoring the suggested speed limit. Many children walking from Great Hollow Middle School use this route which has no sidewalks. Patrons of the Taco Bell on the corner of Southern Blvd. and Rt. 347 use this street as their trash can as they drive through to Lake Avenue.

I wish the cars at least would slow down at our stop sign on Lancaster.....

Yes, St James between Lake Ave and Cambon/Moriches rds. Ever since the town erected stop signs on Woodlawn cars use the side streets as cut throughs. No need to slow down because there's never a cop on the side streets, just kids playing and riding their bikes.

Mount Pleasant road between 347 and 111 for sure!

Alexander Avenue....coming off Middle Country Road going towards LIE
Cars race through...don't stop at stop signs... get backed up waiting for light to change! Feels like a major street! Noisy too!

Mt. Pleasant . Bet 347 + 111. Sadly #1.

it is no wonder that these back roads are being used more than normal after the DOT did their BIG traffic study on main street and decided to create a safety westbound single lane and made it a nightmare to go through town making drivers use alternate routes so it wouldn't take 15 to 20 minutes to get through town

When the STOP signs were first erected on Woodlawn I thought they were just going to be a nuisance but, believe it or not, I got used to them and I even like the fact they help me keep my speed down. I never take the side streets and run through those STOP signs. However over the years, even before the new Woodlawn signs were erected, I have always seen some drivers speed right past the signs on the local streets. One of these creamed me and totaled my car some years ago, luckely I was not hurt. I will conclude there is a woman regularly speeding through one avenue with her BMW probably on the way to work. But I forget, BMW's are exempt from comimg to a STOP!

I know of two dogs killed on Ledgewood Ave. in the Pines. One happened right in front of me. Woman was doing at least 40 and I was wearing a vest. I contacted public safety once but nothing happens. Fourth precinct officers are rarely seen in the Pines. I'd love to know how many tickets they've written on side streets. Granted, we're only hurting ourselves by driving like idiots...when I was a kid, neighbors not only did the speed limit, they actually (gasp!) slowed down when they saw kids. Today any pedestrian is just an obstacle shaving 0.03 seconds off the arrival to soccer practice or to get home to watch the latest reality TV show. We've really fallen fast on this island. Selfish, reckless and not very bright are not good combined traits.

This should not be a problem getting passed. It is across from the hospital there is a nursing homeRead More near by. We need more nursing homes as there are no beds available for our aging population. If you want to stay here near your family as you age and need a nursing home in the future, let them build this. You do not want to go outside of Smithtown and live in nursing homes out of this area - trust me, they are not nice! It is a fact of life, we are all going to be there one day- at least have a say in it and have them build one for our future needs. They do not have much noise or activity- really. Plus they will bring jobs to our area.

Northern Blvd. intersects 25A and runs all the way to Roseville.Read More Northern Blvd is a small street about 1 mile long that is one block over from smithtown HS East main entrance.
