Snowfall Causes School Closings, Possible LIRR Disruptions and More

UPDATE: Smithtown Special Library District is closed for Wednesday.

Smithtown Central School District superintendent Edward Ehmann announced at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting that school would be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 12 due to weather conditions.

Public transportation may also be affected by the snowfall as the Long Island Rail Road issued a warning to passengers that it may suspend service Wednesday morning if the winter storm has the local impact that has been .

MTA officials said the LIRR hopes to keep service rolling on all 11 of its branches, but may need to temporarily suspend trains if 10 or more inches of snow accumulate to keep trains from being stranded. MTA officials also suggested those who do not need to travel Wednesday to not do so. The LIRR said it would continually evaluate the impact of the storm on.
