This Week at Your Library: Reading is for the Dogs

This week at the Smithtown and Nesconset branches of the Smithtown Special Library District features events ranging from reading to dogs to playing with Legos.

This week a variety of programs are being held at the Smithtown Special Library District. Highlights for the children's department this week in addition to regular weekly programs is the  program held in the Nesconset Branch.  Read to Rover is a program geared for children in grades Kindergarten through second. Children will be able to sit with a dog who is trained to sit quietly besides a child and practice reading aloud to the animals in order to gain confidence with their own reading skills. All of the dogs that participate in this program are certificated by the local chapter of Therapy Dogs International. There are two sessions of Read to Rover being held on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 5:50 p.m and 6:10 p.m.

Another program highlight this week is a talk being given by Dr. Robert S. Newman on osteoporosis entitled Osteoporosis: Not For Women Only. Dr. Newman will be discussing the disease in general with advice on how to prevent osteoporosis, as well as how to recognize early symptons on the disease. He will also speak on the different options available to treat osteoporosis and how to live with the disease once you have been diagnosed. A portion of the dicussion will focus on how osteoporosis affects men, since it is a disease that more commonly affects women. Dr. Newman will be at the main branch of the library on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
