Vecchio Once Served in JFK's NYPD Guard Unit

Smithtown supervisor helped ensure Kennedy's safety during a visit to New York City prior to his election as presd

A black-and-white photograph hanging in Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio's office captures a moment when he was side-by-side with late President John F. Kennedy.

Vecchio, while a young New York City detective, served in a NYPD guard unit during Kennedy's visit in October 1960 - roughly one week before he was elected president, Newsday  reports.

The photograph shows Vecchio walking alongside a Chevrolet convertible, atop of which sits then Sen. John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, as they wave to the Manhattan crowds.

Vecchio took his job seriously, recalling into a minor altercation with a photographer who tried to get too close to the Kennedys during the procession to City Hall.

It was one of at least 10 times Vecchio remembers guarding the Kennedys through the 60s.
