Centereach Man Helps Officers Pull Woman from Burning Car

A Holbrook woman, trapped in a burning car after a multi-car crash Thursday evening in front of the Smith Haven Mall, was pulled to safety by a Good Samaritan and two police officers.

Suffolk County fourth precinct officers David Vlacich and Bryan Bourdeaux responded to a 911 call at 5:45 p.m. regarding the crash, which happened on Middle Country Rd. and New Moriches Rd. in Lake Grove. When they arrived they saw that one of the cars in the three-car crash was on fire and a woman was trapped inside.

Nesconset Man Seeks A Living Kidney Donor

You may not have met Nesconset resident Kevin Schnurr, but he needs a kidney, so "donate maybe?" 

Schnurr, 27, is searching for a living kidney donor after being diagnosed with Alport Syndrome, a rare genetic disease that results in kidney failure and hearing loss. 

Former Carpetland of Smithtown to Become Real Estate Office

A long-standing Smithtown Main Street storefront will soon be getting a makeover and a new tenant. 

The former Carpetland of Smithtown will be taken over by Signature Premiere Properties, a commercial and residential real estate agency is expanding to build their fifth branch location on Long Island. 

Smithtown Schools Send Race to the Top Funds Back to State

Smithtown school officials have taken the stance that protecting their students's personal information is more important than $2,000 in federal Race to the Top funds. 

Smithtown Board of Education voted unanimously on Nov. 13 to opt out of a program that would give local access to a data dashboard - a collection of three companies collecting student data throughout the state.

Burger King Eyes Take Over of Vacant Wendy's

There are signs of change could be coming to the vacant Wendy's in Smithtown on West Jericho Turnpike near Commack, as a new tenant has proposed to take over the local eyesore. 

Burger King has submitted site plans for 942 West Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown, but will need Smithtown's Board of Zoning Appeals approval before moving forward.
