A half dozen fire departments responded to a blaze at a Smithtown home Monday afternoon that is believed to have started in a basement dryer.
Michael Landrigan, a Smithtown Fire Department assistant chief, was the first one on the scene of the fire on Sheila Drive around 2:30 p.m. The two people inside the home–a mother and her child–at the time of the fire were on the front lawn when Landrigan arrived.
A Hauppauge man was arrested Thursday after he crashed his car on New Highway and then fled the scene as police were attempting to apprehend him for striking two vehicles on the Northern State Parkway, State Police said.
According to police, Peter Mackoul, 31, was driving a 2013 BMW eastbound on the Northern State near Exit 46 at a "high rate of speed" when his car made contact with two other vehicles on the parkway.
Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio is proposing a 2014 budget that would offer homeowners a break in taxes thanks to a combination of prior budgeting, a projected increase revenue and use of reserve funds.
Town of Smithtown officials have proposed a $104.3 million budget for 2014, representing an overall $700,000 increase over the current 2013 budget. However, its will under New York State's property tax cap by $2.3 million.
