Weird News: Local Demon House Makes TV Debut

Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Northern Suffolk and the East End.

As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.

Scary Stuff

Rehabbing your home usually unearths some unpleasant surprises like crooked walls or bad wiring. But St. James homeowner Jeanette Meyran dealt with something much worse: demons.

Meyran, widow of a Bronx firefighter who died in the Black Sunday blaze of 2005 that killed two men, chronicles her experience on SyFy’s Paranormal Witness, which aired last a few weeks ago.

The account isn’t for the faint of heart, that is, unless you’re accustomed to rotting corpse demons stepping out of mirrors. We thought not.

Animal Hoarding House

The Town of Brookhaven on Monday condemned a Miller Place house – the subject of many resident complaints – for unsanitary conditions brought about by animal hoarding.

Residents nearby contacted the Town about strong smells coming from the house and the presence of several pets that were living there in horrid conditions. Ten cats, two kittens and one dog were found in the house. They also reported that the yard was not maintained and had become an eyesore with overgrown vegetation throughout.

Have You Seen This Alligator?

About two months after four alligators were pulled from the waters of the Peconic River in Calverton, officers with the Department of Environmental Conservation are once again on the hunt for a reptile in the area after confirming this week that one was on the loose.

Officials are unsure whether the creature is an alligator or a caiman, a similar animal coming from the same family as gators.

Both, however, are unnatural to the area and could be dangerous.
