Traffic on Long Island is simply a pain.

Nearby thoroughfares like the Southern State Parkway, Long Island Expressway, and Meadowbrook State Parkway topped the list of most clogged on Long Island.

But what about in Smithtown? Whether it's a stretch of road where merging holds up the line or a red light that never changes, the area has its fair share of traffic-prone streets.

What are the most clogged streets in Smithtown? Are there any stretches of road you avoid at a certain time of day? Have you written to lawmakers to improve the congestion on a street near you?

The Eastbound side of 347 starting at Pep Boys and ending at Stony Brook Road is Lake Grove. The westbound side from Nichols to Sports Authority is Stony Brook. That is not Smithtown's traffic problems. The worst traffic in Smithtown is Main Street. Especially that debacle they created by Rt 111. Second is when traffic builds up from the cement place to Lake Avenue on Middle country. Oh, and if we are counting Nesconset, Smithtown blvd backs up from Old Nichols Rd, all the way back to Southern Blvd

Sorry it's still Main Street from Terry Road to 111!!!!!

I have to agree with Fitzy and Guest. Main Street in Smithtown is the worst, especially going Westbound. All those changes did nothing but make it worse to get through Smithtown - going west. Forget just to 111. It's terrible from Terrry Road all the way to Edgewood. What idiot designed it as a 1 lane road from Terry Road to the Library, made it 2 lanes right at the library and then down to 1 lane when you cross 111. And the timing of the lights - can any one say nightmare. And the best part, none of these changes would have saved any lives. All it did was make going through Smithtown torture. I know if I have to buy something, I'll go out of my way just to avoid traffic in Smithtown. I head east or South to other towns rather than fight the traffic on Main Street.

I take the back roads through Smithtown and if I need something on Main street which is very rare, I cut through the back of the shopping centers.

Exactly. And who does it hurt - the small business owners. All these traffic changes have hurt them. Unfortunately, the wants of a few outweighed the needs of the many!
