Where's the Gazebo? Nesconset Chamber Seeks Funding for Sign

Nesconset Chamber of Commerce seeks county Downtown Revitalization funds for signage to define center of its community.

Too many phone calls and emails repeatedly asking for directions to the Nesconset gazebo have pushed the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce to take action.

"It's unbelievable how people who know the area know where the gazebo is, but people coming in from out of town or those who don't know the area simply don't have a clue," said Gina Coletti, president of the Nesconset Chamber.

Nesconset Chamber of Commerce is applying to Suffolk County for a grant in Round 11 of the Downtown Revitalization to build a sign identifying the gazebo and village green at Charles P. Toner Park on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset. Smithtown Town Board voted unanimously to support their application on Tuesday.

"The sign will be a no brainer," Coletti said.

The proposed plans call for a two-sided ground sign, visible to drivers heading both directions on Smithtown Boulevard. It will have a brick base with two white columns to support the sign topped with crown molding.

The Nesconset gazebo serves as the site of many community events each year including Nesconset Day, the annual Summer Concert Series and several craft fair and local festivals that attract up to 15,000 people per day.

Coletti said the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce has used grant funds from earlier rounds of the Downtown Revitalization program to install street lights along Smithtown Boulevard earlier this year.

"We’ve defined the downtown area with the street lights and now trying to enhance it with the signage," she said.
