Smithtown Man Dies in Head-on Crash Friday

Police said a man driving a Dodge Durango crossed over Commack Road around 6:30 p.m. Friday, striking a Nissan Altima.

A Smithtown man was killed in a Friday afternoon car crash after police said he crossed over Commack Road in Deer Park, striking another car and killing a Brentwood man as well.

Two others – including a three-year-old boy – were sent to hospitals and remain in critical condition, according to police.

Police identified the victims Saturday morning after the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Friday. Police said Robert Fattibene, 53, of Smithtown, was driving his Dodge Durango northbound on Commack Road while Herver Leonel Garcia Munoz, 32, of Brentwood, was in the driver's seat of a 1999 Nissan Altima at the time of the crash.

Garcia Munoz' son, Justin Martinez, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip by North Babylon Rescue. The mother of Justin Martinez, 24-year-old Yesenia Marilu Martinez Vasquez, 24, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police are continuing their investigation and asking anyone with information about the crash to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152.
