Another Rotten Lumber Yard? [Empty in Smithtown]

Former Sider Lumber location crumbles in St. James, leaving a big space to fill in town. Got an idea to replace it?

The sounds of saws and splintering wood haven't been heard in years along Middle County Road, ever since left its longtime St. James hub for newer digs at 45 Southern Boulevard in Nesconset several years ago.

And the spot, which , isn't getting finer with age.

According to Jim Dunn, an agent with Atlantic Property Services, which is listing the property, said he's marketing the parcel as a bundle with an adjacent vacant house and empty former antique auto dealer.

He said he's confident he'll find a buyer.

But in wait, the property stands as another ghost in the area, chained off and crumbling along one of Smithtown's most trafficked arteries.

Because the property abuts a St. James residential area, we at Smithtown Patch wonder what the community would like to see move in to such a large parcel?

Look at the roads. What a mess. Who runs that town a complete idiot. Typical Highway Dept Maintenance. Long Island has become a disaster

I have no clue. Why not ask the chamber of commerce what their thinking is? And please let's think outside the box, meaning that whatever goes there will mean jobs!

Interesting idea, Amy. Curious if you know a new convenience store called Smart Mart just opened across the street? Has anyone seen it?

I haven't noticed it yet. I will have to drive by soon. Another idea would be to use the lot for weekend flea market type space, when the weather gets warmer. People could pay a fee to use space to sell garage sale type items until the lot is sold and developed.

How about the farmers market flea markets like Kings Park has? Those are very enjoyable.

No more stores - there are so many vacant stores in our town. The Farmers Market is okay IF they were cheap, the one in KP is so expensive that many of them go home with what they brought. To make a successful flea market you have to bring affordable items that will sell not sit on your table. And, in order to do this the area would have to be cleaned up as it would be difficult to have anything with the buildings still there. My suggestion is for the landlord to clean up the area and market it as vacant land. The only thing that would make it there is a 7-11 or a restaurant chain like Outback or Applebees.

I went to check out Smart Mart (I never noticed it before)....It's not bad...it is a 7-11 in disguise...It will probably come in handy for quick pick ups (milk was $4.99 a gallon)....Still wish it was a Handy Pantry..Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Walk in Medical Center! They always do well. Alot easier than going to ER plus they take your plan and you don't have to pay $75-$100 + for ER and you are not there 4+ hours.

They are crazy for what they are asking to buy The old Sider Lumber Yard. They are trying to put a CVS there on the corner.

The town can make it a safe paid parking lot with lights - like in Port Jeff Village, remove the main street parking ( because it is part of the overall safety problem ) have a revenue generating parking lot across the street from town hall and this will help the businesses in the west part of main street parking lot, smithtown can use it !
