Demolition Planned for Main Street Eyesore [Empty in Smithtown]

Vacant building at 10 East Main Street slated to become a masonry retail store.

A building on the corner of East Main Street and Lawrence Avenue that has long been vacant has an appointment with a wrecking ball, paving the way for to a masonry retail store on the site, according to plans filed with the town's building department.

The project has been underway since 2008, according to Smithtown's chief building inspector, Bill White. Documents at his office show plans for a building with a footprint of more than twice the size of the current structure extending to the sidewalk along Lawrence Avenue.

White did not say when the work would begin.

While the back of the blue building has gathered dust, a site of a former car dealership with its large, chained-off parking lot, the building's front houses the former frozen treats shop.

The site is also marked by a sign for the Smithtown Downtown Revitalization Program, which has been turned around and vandalized with an unfortunate expletive ().

Razing 10 East Main Street could also have an affect on Cyrus Place, an English pub-style bar .

White said the bar's bathroom is actually built into the building that is planned for demolition.
