Locals Line Up Their Carts for Fairway Market

Most seem to love the idea of another grocery store in town.

News that Fairway market plans to open a new market in the DSW strip mall in Lake Grove didn't exactly go unnoticed last week, as dozens of local shared their excitement – and, a few, trepidation – over Fairway's move.

We've shared an assortment below from our site comment boards. Be sure to add your own feedback in the comment section:

"I'm thrilled that we are getting Fairway here! I went there all the time in Plainview! Now I don't have to commute all the way there for the great chopped salads, food, fresh fruit, etc. can't wait!"

"There is Waldbaums, Aldis, whole foods , trader joes in area. Fairway is nice but pricey. Great cheese selection. I have been to Plainview location many times"

"Excited!! Love Fairway. Agree Waldbaums has gone downhill. Just hope Fairway sells the same quality and selection of items as found in Plainview."

"Whole Foods … I went in to investigate one night, to see what all the hub-bub was about … nice store … freakin prices through the roof … Fairway in Plainview expensive too, was not impressed by the look of the store ...reminded me of the old Farmers Market in Bethpage"

"Love Fairway! Moved back to Smithtown four years ago, but lived in Nassau for a while and went to the Plainview store a lot. Found them to be on par with Whole Foods, but some prices are lower. Also they have more variety of international foods - love that. Also, they had a cafe in Plainview. Good place to eat - like Whole Foods. Can't wait."

"I can't wait to check them out! We're a GMO-free family so I know my prices when it comes to organic foods."

"I am not familiar with Fairway stores but only heard good things. Yes I am excited that one will be coming here."

"Excited, but disappointed with store lately. Was there this past week, their prices have gotten out of hand.... Produce not as good and way too expensive. Would shop there for meat and speciality items."

"Finally an interesting and affordable supermarket in the area!!! About time!"

"Fantastic! They will definitely give Whole Foods a run... for our money!"

"Finally, fill up all these empty spaces with some good stores."

"Waldbaums and King Kullen will come to an end because they haven't changed with the times. King Kullen, "America's first supermarket" is woefully backwards. Waldbaums is steps away from Chapter 11 or possibly being sold. (Walbaums is owned by A&P which already has its Pathmark chain up for sale) Fairway, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Stew Lenard's and a host of others nationwide have changed to be more competitive, have new offerings and an interesting shopping experience for customers. Long Island may be home to America's first suburbs and first enclosed mall (Smith Haven) but in so many respects things have not been updated to retain current standards much less innovation and interest. Our pathetic supermarket landscape is only is only area that this is true."

"Although my family will definitely be shopping at the new Fairway Market, we will continue to shop at our two favorite grocers, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods because of the fabulous, friendly staff. They have low turnover with their employees and some of them treat us like family, especially making extra efforts to make our 8-year-old Daughter feel special and it makes her enjoy the food shopping experience."
