Luso to Take Over Former Sertinos Cafe Location

Luso's owner says the move should be complete by March.

Needing more space to cater to a rapidly expanding clientele has forced Luso Restaurant to move west on Main Street into a the recently vacated home of another popular Smithtown eatery – Sertinos Cafe.

Luisa Batista, owner of Luso Restaurant, an eatery that specializes in authentic Portuguese wood-char barbecue, said that she is confident her restaurant will do well in the 133 West Main Street location despite having two restaurants close there – Sertinos Cafe and Sizzler.

"We've got to take chances in life," she said. "I guess I'm going to do good over there because I have a good reputation, I've been in this business for almost 30 years and I've always been successful ... it's a good location and I'm going to make it work over there."

Smithtown Rez are you saying that towns that have IHOP are not classy and look like Portion Rd? Do you know that Great Neck and Manhasset have IHOP in their towns? IHOP does not bring down the neighborhood. If you have kids, IHOP is a great place to go for breakfast in the mornings especially on special occasions. The one is Commack is very nice. The one by the mall is also nice. It would be nice to have another place to go for breakfast and lunch besides the diner. And whoever decides to take the small storefront will experience the same problem -parking. I think that store front will be vacant for a long time. We have not seen anyone new coming to the Mandees or the hardware store and that is a great location for any store since it has parking. Ecomony is taking its toll on alot businesses today. If we are going to go out we want the best we can get for our dollar.

Jack, what "element" do you mean?????
Mike February 8, 2013 at 08:00 pm
Come on people ,a local restaurant is expanding . Good luck Luso ! We look forward to dining there.
Tough2beat February 8, 2013 at 10:54 pm
Luso is making an excellent decision to move down the road. Better visiblilty is always good for business. As for those looking for another IHOP in that locale......jeez, we already have three within a few miles of downtown Smithtown. Good luck Luso!
P. J. Miller February 9, 2013 at 12:25 am
Yes Good Luck to Luso But just saying it would be nice to have a place to take the kids and family, and friends in Smithtown.

I'm happy to see Luso moving to a bigger location. Their food is delicious. Took relatives that were visiting here from Greece and they said it was the best food they had while visiting the US. I love Luso but the small size made for long waiting times for dinner at prime time on a Friday/Saturday night. They are always busy. I wish them much success when they move to their new location.

I agree, I can't see why we should welcome outside large corporate interests onto our Main Street. It's one of Smithtown's great appeals. Home made, home grown a little bit of Agriculture. We need real commerce amongst our own community not some outside influence siphoning cash outside.
Ken Heard February 11, 2013 at 03:46 am
I think an IHOP at Smithtown Station Would be better for the town and residents. At last, competition for Maureens Kitchen and the diner located on Jericho and RT.111.
Let's cool it on upscale Manhattan wannabees
E Baum February 11, 2013 at 08:44 pm
What about the shopping center where the hardware store, clothing store and Pizza place was? That would be a great spot for a JR's steakhouse or IHOP. I miss JR'S Steakhouse though. The IHOP at the mall is not too far and then there is one in Commack
Ken Heard February 11, 2013 at 10:00 pm
I think that would place IHOP to close to the town center abd would hurt the high priced Manhattan wannabees. A little further west near the train station and it hurts nobody, Also,PLEASE. No More Steakhouses. How about a French restaurant and a German restaurant and an Italian restaurant that specializes in Northern Italian cuisine ( no pizza, spaggetti, or lasanga). Finally, as you can see, I have nothing against Manhattan wannabee restaurants, but face reality. We are Smithtown, not Beverly Hills or Fifth Avenue. If you are thinking you are " clever., classless and free", then think again. In five years, a goodly number of these upscale restaurants will be gone. This community cannot supportthose many.
But this is a long silly season. The new Superman movie will be available only at IMAX for the first two days. Price" $ 37 per ticket ". A family of 4 would be lucky if they shelled out less than $200 for the evening. Popcorn, anyone ?? Bon Appitite.

Ken do you have stock in ihop? PLEASE move to Farmingville!!!
lori February 11, 2013 at 10:22 pm
Please stop this unbelievably stupid commentary!! We should be happy and proud that our local businesses are doing well in this economy!! Anyone who does not want the "Manhattan wannabes" in our town is a fool!! We have plenty of places surrounding us for "families" including two ihops within a few miles! The draw of outsiders as well as the ability to dine nicely in our town is a wonderful thing!! There are lots of neighborhood restaurants that are bringing business in and boosting the economy I cannot understand why you would think that we need any mediocre chain restaurants to come in.
Lets wish our neighbors good luck in their new location!! Wishing Luso the best in your new location!!
We Heart Long Island February 11, 2013 at 10:34 pm
Thank you Lori.
P. J. Miller February 12, 2013 at 12:37 am
What does IHOP have to do with Farmingville? IHOP is a great place to go for a meal breakfast, lunch or dinner. It would be nice to have a place to go on Main Street with the whole family. I know alot of families with kids that cannot go to Luso because kids don't eat their cuisine. Today families like to go out together. A family restaurant would do very well. So if it has to be a 'chain restaurant' so be it - at least they will draw the customers in. We have alot of vacant buildings in town - we need to bring in whatever we can otherwise we will have no town left.
Ken Heard February 12, 2013 at 01:41 am
Spot on, PJ. Excellent reply. By the way, one up scale eatery did go under recently-SORTINOS. it was viewed as being a notch or two above Starbucks. . On this field of dreams, they built it and no one came.. You need a large orange and white facade
to catch the attention of passing cars, just like IHOP has near Roslyn Heights on Route 25 A . You also need a compamy with resources to let consumers know IHOP is there. For children, you need a menu with food that appeals to children .Now we are talking family restaurant. Expand Luzo's by all means(see E. Baum''s recommendation above), but put it closer to the center of town where all the other up scale restaurants are Why ? Because people are creatures of habit. They will go to the same restaurant srea time and again and avoid those in areas outside the center. If you want a lesson , call Conan o'Brien and Jay Leno and ask them how there ratings did when the crackerjacks at NBC broke a viewer pattern that has been fixed and reliable for the past 40 years. IHOP, by the way, would do well by the train station. It stands out clearly to passing motorists and its reputation for quality food is unquestioned. Once again anyone opening another up scale restaurant must develop a feel for when the marketplace gets saturated. It will be a bumpy ride, but I hope the comments I made prove helpful

Agreed! Good luck Luso! We <3 u!

Ken Heard February 14, 2013 at 11:26 am
You must really ;love Luzp to comment on a 2/8 article at nearly midnite on 2/13. I am sure rhe food is great. I just question the new location and stress the need for more family restaurants like IHOP..

That's too bad that they're moving. Their outside back area is nice to dine in. I'm sure they'll do the same at their new place.

Steven and Terry,
I agree with you wholeheartedly!!! Warmest wishes and Best of luck for much success and happiness in the new place Louisa and staff!!! Luso is a very integral part of our Smithtown family!!! and most all, are thrilled to see them expanding! It's too bad there will always be 'jealous and negative' people around... but, even they can express their opinion. I am looking forward to only wonderful things for Luso and I can't wait for their grand opening!!!! It's wonderful little restaurants like Luso that make Smithtown stand apart from other towns!!! GOooooo LUSO!!!!!
JH March 28, 2013 at 03:07 pm
Ken... enjoy IHOP near the mall. It's really not very far for you to travel!
We also have Maureen's kitchen which is fabulous for 'breakfast'!
JH March 28, 2013 at 03:18 pm
Michelle... the same gal (Louisa) is setting up the 'new Luso'.... I have no doubt the new Luso will be equally as warm and charming and with much better seating! Have faith!
By the way... There were people who were not happy about that wonderful outdoor patio... Let's give Luso our support and enjoy all of the care and love being put intot the new restaurant!
JH March 28, 2013 at 03:19 pm
Thank you Mike!!! I agree!!!
JH March 28, 2013 at 03:22 pm
Well said!!! Thank you Lori!!!
JH March 28, 2013 at 03:28 pm
Angrytaxpayer... ask the 'town officials' why they feel the need to make it difficult for some restaurants to add tables and chairs outside of the restaurant....
Smithtown has a lot of rules and regulations. Maybe that's why we have such a nice little town.... but they do make it very difficult at times
JH March 29, 2013 at 02:44 pm
LUSO IS NOW OPEN!!! and more wonderful than ever!!!! May they have all the best of luck and good wishes in the new location!!!!! It's BEAUTIFUL and the food is FABULOUS!!!
Bob Chapinska April 14, 2013 at 03:12 pm
Ken, You're broke and cannot afford luso. You actually called ihop an upscale dining establishment. You are the town bum, trolling against a wonderful, local owned business in favor of a corporately owned ihop? What kind of moron are you? Just because you cannot afford to dine at Luso doesnt mean others cant. While Luso has done a fantastic job embracing the community with delicious food, all you have done is sat here complaining. Go back to the government assistance line and get your welfare check.
Ken Heard April 14, 2013 at 03:49 pm
Bob, the last comment regarding Luzo was made over two weeks ago on March 29. How can youwrite such a passionate , angry letter regarding old news concerning the location of a restaurant ?
You remind me of Jack Klugman on the old TV series Qiuincy MEwho took passionate stands on everything. If watching a midle aged guy aegue about everything and anything, then Quincy is right up your alley. Now that Jack Klugman has passed on, you would be an excellent choice for Quincy, should the folks in La La Land every decide to bring it back. But then again, you probably have an argument for this suggestion already. Maybe Charlie Sheen's role on Anger Management but...NAH. It would just inspire another pointless argument.

@ J.P. Miller.. Why do you feel bad for the residents who live near the proposed catering hall onRead More Edgewood, but don't care that my neighbor and I will have to endure the same if this assisted living facility goes up. Is one a little too close to your backyard ?
P. J. Miller June 18, 2013 at 02:36 pm
Assisted living is a good thing - they are not filled with drunken people, loud music....noise!!Read More Sit in a parking lot of an assisted living you will see that first they are not filled with cars. Honestly, having been through the system with parents and relatives, it is sad what happens to some of the people at assisted living or nursing homes. Relatives just drop them off and never visit. You'll get the occasional visit on maybe Christmas or Mothers / Fathers day, but for the most part they get very little foot traffic. And the people that work there tell the same story. But it is quiet. I would prefer an assisted living over a catering hall any day of the week.
