New Mexican Restaurant Looks to Take Over Former Uncle Bacala's

There's signs of a new restaurant setting up business in Smithtown.

A bright and colorful sign announces a new Mexican restaurant is looking to move onto Route 25A.

A  large red sign announces Azulejos, a Mexican restaurant, will be taking over the former Uncle Bacala's on Middle Country Road in Smithtown. It states the Mexican restaurant is "coming soon" while window awnings still bear the Uncle Bacala's name.

Uncle Bacala's, an Italian restaurant featuring seafood and more, closed its Smithtown location last year.  The restaurant's phone number has been disconnected but no message or posting indicates its closure to local residents.

Owner Peter Hewitson told Newsday the Smithtown restaurant, which opened in 2011, really hadn't been making any money.

"There are about 35 Italian restaurants within a mile or two,” Hewitson said to Newsday, also citing construction and traffic problems contributed to the restaurant's closure.

Are you excited to learn of Azulejos? Are you willing to try the food when it opens?
