Phountain Brings Alkaline Education, Green Products to Main Street

It’s not hard to be health and wellness conscious as a Smithtown resident, with a long list of gyms and fitness centers to yoga studios, nutritionists, health food eateries and more dominating the local business landscape. 

Phountain, a life-extension club and alkaline water store, could now be added to that list. 

While Phountain – open for roughly one week – is now part of the local wellness landscape, it has a goal that differs from others in the landscape.  

“Our thing is education, which is to empower people. That’s why people appreciate us. It’s not like I’m saying, ‘here, take this product home, it works – trust me,’” said Michael Mastrantuono, who has been with Phountain for more than three years. “We’re getting you to understand the lifestyle so when you do walk out this door you have what you need to make decisions for yourself. A lot of people rely on products without truly knowing how or what the product does.”

Mastrantuono explained that Phountain, located at 55 East Main Street, is an alkaline education center that teaches the benefits of being alkaline.

“We are born alkaline, we die acidic,” he said. “The idea is to maintain the body in an alkaline state, because as long as you do so diseases, infections, bacteria have a very, very difficult time living in the human body.” 

To illustrate the importance of keeping your body alkaline, Mastrantuono provided an analogy between the human body and a swimming pool: “As long as you keep your swimming pool alkaline – that’s the reason people put chlorine in it and they’re always testing their pH – [there will be] no fungus, no germs, no bacteria, no disease, no infection, no microorganisms.” For the body to avoid the things mentioned in the analogy, Mastrantuono said your body must be alkaline.

Phountain offers courses with 35-45 minutes of alkaline education, illustrating the importance of having a preventative and not a reactive mindset in preventing the body from breaking down, something Mastrantuono said is “common sense, but not common knowledge.” 

Although the focus is more on education than products, Phountain offers a variety of things for sale, from powdered vegetables with micronutrients to organic vitamins and minerals, apple cider vinegar, fiber, aloe, vegan protein products and more.

In addition to the products, the life-extension club offers a variety of methods to flush toxins out of the body, from an infrared sauna to a vitamin D sun booth, detox footbaths and vibration therapy. Phountain also has massage rooms with roughly seven massage therapists on-call, and is an alkaline water refill station. 

With stores located in West Islip, Sayville, Commack, East Islip and Massapequa, Mastrantuono said opening in Smithtown was a no-brainer.

“We have a huge clientele all over Long Island,” Mastrantuono said. “Establishing here was easy for us because we had a presence here, just not physically. Now we have the physical presence. A lot of clients from Kings Park to St. James were going out to Commack.”

Phountain is open seven days a week; Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
