School's Out at Oxford Learning Spot [Empty in Smithtown]

Former tutoring center for lease among other empty Main Street properties.

Add the Oxford Learning Center to the class of empty spaces on Smithtown's Main Street, though this one is hoping a new tenant gives it a second chance.

The 3,049-square-foot space at 90 West Main Street is up for lease for $4,500 a month, according to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, with annual taxes of $11,000.

The former tutoring center is listed by St. James-based DeBarbieri Associates.

Oxford, a national chain of learning centers, focuses on tutoring kids from elementary through high school on topics ranging from math and reading to prepping for standardized tests such as the SATs and ACTs. The company also has programs for students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Oxford, however, wasn't the only learning center to drop out in the Smithtown area. The is another spot gathering dust in the community.

On the other hand, Kumon, a national chain focusing on reading and math tutoring, is still teaching kids at its Terry Road location.

also operates in the Smithtown area.

Did you ever bring your kids to Oxford Learning? And what do you think could occupy its empty space on Main Street?

Tomorrow is the vote..vote NO NOW or our taxes are going to continue to sky rocket. Unless we doRead More something this town will continue to spiral down. More taxes aren't going to help. We need to cut expenses and get ourselves on a fiscally responsible plan.

Isn't that above the cap? Funny, when another news source mentioned 5 districts that are breakingRead More the cap they didn't mention Smithtown. Dn't worry, the district will bully and scare the parents into voting yes by threatening programs instead of doing what they need to do which is reduce administrative costs.

We can all make a statement one way or another when we vote. However, that statement should be madeRead More on a state level not the local level. Boards of Ed are powerless to do any real cost cutting. The state needs to take this on. We need real reform in Albany to reduce the ever increasing pensions and life long benefits that educators enjoy. Combine this with letting Albany decide salary increases for all educators and we can guaranty tax reductions over the next few years. Its that simple, Boards cannot do these. Lets get Albany to move on these NOW!
