Smithtown Hardware to Relocate in April

The hardware store, a business that has served the community for a decade, will close its doors and move to the Village Commons Shopping Center.

In early April, Smithtown Hardware will shutter the location it's held for a decade at 82 West Main St. and relocate to 52 East Main St. in the Village Commons Shopping Center.

For the owners, the decision was about size and exposure.

“The space is larger. It’s about twice the size of our store, and it’s actually a better location," said Michael Costello, president of Costello’s Ace Hardware. "Where we are right now, it’s a little bit hidden from traffic. The new place is in a nice shopping center with a lot of exposure.”

The move echoes a trend in Smithtown, the emptying of the downtown-like north side of Main Street in favor of newer storefronts on the strip-mall side of the street. Recently, Karl Ehmer Meats of Smithtown left is its 91 East Main St. storefront and moved into the Village Commons.

And just like Karl Ehmer changed it's name to Main Street Meats, Smithtown Hardware will be rebranded.

“Right now, we’re open as Smithtown Hardware. We do operate 15 other stores, but under the Costello’s Ace Hardware. So, this will also be an Ace Hardware under the Costello’s name,” Costello said.

Due to the relocation, there are several sales at Smithtown Hardware.

“We’re actually doing liquidation in our store right now. That’s going to go on for about the next six weeks,” Costello said. “We have some serious deals right now. Right now, we’re at 30 and 50 percent off everything in the store.”

The current staff will also be moving to the new location, along with some new members.

“As far as we know, everybody is coming over,” Costello said. “We’re probably going to have to add some staff, because we have a larger space. We’re hiring.”

Over the years, Smithtown Hardware has made contributions to the Smithtown community.

“We like to partake in community events and involvement as well and support local causes,” Costello said. “I think that moving to the new place is going to probably give us that much more exposure, because really from a visibility standpoint, it’s in a much better location.”
