New York Stuffed Cone Company Sweetens Up St. James

St. James couple bucks the yogurt trend and offers up a colossal cone.

For a cone that requires a spoon and toppings that go beyond rainbow and chocolate sprinkles, head to the recently opened New York Stuffed Cone Company and prepare to pack in some serious topping temptations.

The shop, which opened at the end of February, is the creation of husband and wife Dave and Lauren Saracino, who believe St. James is ripe for a place like this.

“We wanted to create a place for kids and families to come and not feel rushed,” said Dave. “It’s like an old-fashioned urban mix.”

It was a drive home from Carvel that had Dave thinking that toppings should play a more important role in a cone.

“He said to me, wouldn’t it be great if the toppings were all throughout the cone and not just on the top,” said his wife Lauren. “That just got us thinking.”

The couple, who said they didn’t like the in and out self-service of the latest yogurt shop craze, makes no apologies for their colossal cones, which are packed with three layers of toppings.

“We are not a low-fat kind of place,” said Lauren. “We’re not for the faint of heart.”

Topping choices include gummy bears, Oreos, Snickers, M&Ms, balsamic strawberries and almonds to name a few. Customers can also order some signature cones like the Central Park, Strong Island or St. James.

Ice cream flavors are unique and change often. For March, try the Guinness flavor, which smells like an Irish pub, but is surprisingly creamy and sweet. A kid favorite is Cookie Monster, bright blue ice cream blended Oreo cookies and Nilla wafers. Though not made on premises, the ice cream is all homemade from the Magic Fountain in Mattituck, which has its own loyal following.

Customers can linger in stools placed at the counter or lounge in the sofas by a large flat screen television.  Shakes and sundaes are also offered as well as breakfast, which the couple said they are hoping will take off.

“We aren’t just dessert,” said Lauren. “We have stuffed waffles with caramelized bacon, blueberries and a variety of crepes.” Espressos and lattes are also on tap as well as a few lighter choices like fruit shakes and smoothies.

Excited for the warmer weather, Lauren said being at the shop is the most enjoyable part of the business.

“Nothing sad about coming to a place like this,” she said.

The New York Stuffed Cone Company is located in the Gymboree shopping center on North Country Road in St. James.
