Look through the glass door of Yucatan Tanning at 79 West Main Street in Smithtown and you won't see a single lightbulb, let alone an ultraviolet one.
That's because the tanning studio has emptied out, joining the ranks of the other vacancies on Main Street, including located right next door.
For the past few weeks, we've profiled a dozen of these empty properties, and there are dozens more we'll get to well into the New Year. At the same time, the conversation surrounding these posts has been pointed and intelligent, suggesting real concern over the state the community from its locals.
Concerns like this, from Jonathan Vecchi: "This will be the first of many stores that will close on the strip if something is not done to improve the appeal of Smithtown Main Street. I do fear that a Ghost-town may be a potential future if we do not get things together."
And this, from George Rechis: "Would love to see overall revamp of downtown. Should include housing, entertainment, open space, etc. A place to be, not just drive through."
So as we continue this series, we'd like to know what questions you want answered?
