Taco Eating Contest Touches Down at Del Fuego's Thursday

Second annual contest marks the start of football season at Del Fuego Tex Mex Kitchen.

Are you ready to rumble? For tacos and football that is.

Del Fuego Tex Mex Kitchen and Tequila Bar in St. James will celebrate the kickoff of the 2013 National Football League's season with its second annual taco eating contest on Thursday at 7 p.m.

"It’s something fun for the community. The owner is big into having a fun night and having the community come out," said Helena Ludrosky, a spokeswoman for Del Fuego.

Ludrosky said last year's contest winner managed to eat 13 tacos in under 5 minutes.

"They are pretty decent sized tacos, there’s a lot of food on there," she said.

This year, the stakes have increased. The person who manages to eat the most tacos in the allotted time will win $100 cash prize, second place will take home a $50 gift card to Del Fuego, and third place will win a $25 gift card.

This year's competition is being sponsored by Milagro Tequila, according to Ludrosky. The bar will offer special cocktails featuring the tequila throughout the night.

"We are expecting about 25. Right now we have about a dozen people signed up," Ludrosky said.

The contest is $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 5. Those interested can register in person at the bar. All participants will get a free T-shirt.
