The Dish: Edgy Side of FeelGoods Cafe

Veggie burgers are "Edgy Burgers" at the cafe, with different vehicles, styles and themes to choose from.

There are more healthy food options than fast food establishments locally, but if you want to get something healthy to eat and do so quickly a spot to hit would be FeelGoods Cafe. The St. James establishment is known for its "Edgy Burgers," a veggie burger with, well, an edge.

The Dish: Edgy Burger ($11)

What is it: There are a dozen non-meat "edgy burgers" and an additional three with meat the cafe calls "not edgy" burgers. For this particular meal the Greek sausage with spinach "not edgy" burger was the choice. For the "vehicle" we went with a whole grain wrap, but you could also go with a whole grain panini, a whole grain pita, organic mixed greens or steamed organic brown rice. Finally, for the theme, the "Tex-Mex Titan" was the choice of eight varieties.

How does it taste: The chicken sausage was not overbearing and a lot of the flavor of the burger comes from the spinach. The black beans and sweet corn of the "Tex-Mex Titan" theme compliment the spinach well and are in abundance – you'll need a fork or spoon to scoop up all the pieces that fall out of the wrap. The sour cream keeps the burger moist and the cheddar provides a taste different from all the other ingredients.

Sides: All "Edgy Burgers" come with a choice of baby carrots or pretzels.

Beverage: Do you like smoothies? Because FeelGoods has them – you could choose an eight-ounce smoothie for $3 or a 16-ounce smoothie for $5. Mango Madness was the smoothie of choice for this meal, but you could also choose Berry Delicious, Green Machine, CYO Smoothie and Peanutty Perfection.

Why you should eat this: It's never a bad thing when you enjoy your meal and it is also good for you. You'll leave the cafe happy that you did the right thing for your health and your taste buds.

How, in a period of rapidly declining enrollment, can costs be increasing so much from year to year,Read More you ask? The answer is in front of you in black and white. I urge you to READ your district’s budget: we are funding retirements when many of us cannot afford to fund our own during difficult economic times. These wheels were set in motion by contracts negotiated in times of unrealistic growth that may likely not occur again. It is time to open up these plans and relieve this unfair burden from our shoulders. Whatever other measures are pursued in order to control costs, including consolidation within and eventually with other districts, are never going to be enough if you cannot get this problem corrected. Write your congressman, for the love of God. If you need any more incentive to do so, please go to http://rocdocs.democratandchronicle.com/database/teacher-pensions-new-york and look at what Smithtown’s retirees are collecting MONTHLY. It will sicken you.
