What Do You Want to See Here? [Empty in Smithtown]

Vacant St. James deli is a big spot to fill. Got any ideas?

While there are plenty of businesses thriving in the Smithtown area, there are more than a handful of empty or boarded up storefronts in the community, a testament to the hard times the area, and the country faces.

And If Monday's story on the few is any indication, it's a subject that has people talking.

Over the next few months, Smithtown Patch is going to spotlight these vacant businesses to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab these abandoned places.

Today, we start with big empty deli that needs filling in St. James.

Occupied by a pork store/deli/market Cambria Foods several years ago, this location now sits empty on 25A. When it was open, the market offered a mish-mash of fare, from soups and salads to pizzas and sandwiches. But it never really got of the ground.

Seems the $1.35 million listing price, and $22,000 in annual taxes, isn't enticing a buyer for the 6,000-square-foot deli – though, if you're interested, the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island has more photos of the property.

It's a large space, but what would you like to see there? Another deli?
