13 Smithtown Businesses That Closed in 2013

A list of shops that closed in the greater Smithtown area in 2013, will you miss them?

As we countdown the final days of 2013, it's time to say goodbye to those who left us this year. 

The year of 2013 was one full of changes for Smithtown Main Street and its businesses. Several stores locked up their doors for the final time, closing down or moving, leaving behind a vacant storefront. 

Here are the stories of local businesses that closed in 2013: 

*T. Carlton's Spalon Shuts Down Overnight
Dozens of customers flocked to a popular Smithtown salon on Friday morning to find their appointments canceled and seek returns on unused gift cards. 

T. Carlton's Spalon put up a handwritten note reading, "Sorry, we  are closed. We are going out of business," on its doors on Aug. 2.

*Cupcake Couture Closes its Main Street Store
Cupcake Couture, a designer cupcake shop, recently its doors at 91 East Main Street in Smithtown in October. A large red-and-white "For Rent" sign was hung in the front window of the bakery as it becomes Main Street's next vacant storefront. 

*Snap Fitness Exits Branch Shopping Plaza
Snap Fitness left the Branch Shopping Plaza, its longtime home, in January 2013 only months after LA Fitness moved into its corner location in October 2012. 

*Nicky G's Pizza Boards Up Its St. James Restaurant
The popular St. James pizzeria and restaurant, located at 244 Lake Avenue, has locked its doors and taped brown paper up over the windows. On Dec. 12, the restaurant was closed as neon signs announcing "Pizza" and "Take Out" remained unlit. 

*Hurricane Sandy, Slow Winter Forces FeelGoods Cafe to Close
FeelGoods Cafe, the St. James eatery known for its "EdgyBurgers," has closed its doors in February. 

In an email interview, FeelGoods Cafe co-owner Nicole Lawrence said that losses stemming from Hurricane Sandy paired with the typical and expected slower business traffic in the winter, led to making a decision to close until April 1. However since making the decision to close until the spring the owners decided a permanent closing was inevitable.

*The Artful Dodger Closes Its Doors Without Notice
The Artful Dodger's glass windows and doors have been covered up as of Aug. 27, its doors locked at 43 West Main Street without notice. There isn't any sign of music or crowds gathered outside its doors on Friday nights

*Uncle Bacala's Closes its Smithtown Location
Uncle Bacala's, an Italian restaurant featuring seafood and more, recently closed its Smithtown location at 368 Middle Country Road. The restaurant's phone number has been disconnected by Dec. 11, but no message or posting indicates its closure to local residents. 

*Blacksmith Tavern Closes Its Doors
Blacksmith Tavern, an American restaurant and pub off Terry Road, closed down in April. The doors of the restaurant were locked on Thursday evening, a time when the drinks would start flowing. 

*Rosebud Boutique in St. James Closes Its Doors
After 20 years in business, Rosebud Boutique on Lake Avenue will be closing its doors.The shop, which sells pocketbooks, scarves, jewelry and small gift items has hung signs in its windows announcing its closing in January 2013. 

*Lindsay B, St. James Fashion Boutique Shutters
St. James fashion shop, Lindsay B Boutique closed its doors in early July after being open for one year.

*Magical Garden Pre-School Locks Its Doors
Magical Garden Pre-School at 70 Smithtown Boulevard has locked its doors and shut down, as a real estate sign was quickly posted on the property on June 13.  

*Checkers Closes At Smithtown/Lake Grove Border
The Checkers drive-in burger shop in Lake Grove has closed less than one year after it opened in May. 

*Empty Chocolate Store Leaves Cavity in Nesconset Plaza
There is now a gap at Nesconset Plaza where Dara's Chocolates, a specialty sweets store, used to be.

The chocolate store opened in November 2012, but was only open for a brief five months. It closed after Easter in March 2013.
