The crickets invade storage buildings, crawlspaces, basements, garages and indoor areas like bathrooms or laundry rooms where moisture may be a problem. As temperatures cool off in these areas they become an attractive spot for these pests to get out of the summer heat. Camel crickets have become a problem this summer in Long Island NY because we have had extremes in weather conditions, i.e, excessive rainfall or extended periods of hot, dry weather. We have had both of these weather patterns this summer.

The Camel Cricket is a large, rounded back cricket which can jump fairly high scaring people as they walk through their basements or enter crawlspaces. Unlike most cricket species that we see, camel crickets do not "chirp like the field cricket which is the cricket we hear all summer long into the early fall on the outside of your house. Camel Crickets will eat pretty much anything organic they can find.

The other pest issue we are having on Long Island this summer is Pavement Ants which many customers are calling about. The most common ant found on Long Island New York is the Pavement Ant. The ant colonies can be found under sidewalks, building slabs, and large rocks.

It is important to check buildings and structures for cracks in foundation walls and interior slabs were ants are most likely to enter. Pavement Ants are drawn towards sand piles and soil particles located in cracks of concrete in building foundations or sidewalks. They become a pest control issue on the warmer months like we are having this summer.

Pavement ants can feed on a wide variety of foods like sweets which include sugars, nectar, fruits, and syrups. Things like grease, insects, seeds are gathered and stored in the nests they build. Morsels of food that fall into cracks on any surface will attract the Pavement Ants attention. In Long Island homes this summer we are seen the ants gather around counters and trash cans. Pavement ants can be a pest control issue in Long Island both Indoors and Outdoors.
