Firefighters Salute Marine Runners Saturday, Encourage Locals to do Same

Maines run to salute 48 fallen soliders that died in Iraq following the 9/11 attacks.

Smithtown and Nesconset firefighters are gearing up to salute runners from the United States Marine Corps on Saturday night who are running from Orient Point to Ground Zero to honor the 48 of 200 deployed marines killed in Iraq following the 9/11 attacks.

Tom Squillacioti of the Smithtown Fire Department said via email that the runners will make their way through Smithtown at roughly 8 p.m. and the two departments are working to put together an arch detail with the American Flag for them to run by around St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church.

Squillacioti said over the phone Friday night that he would like to see as many locals as possible come out and cheer on the marines as they pass through the town.
