How Do You Recycle?

With allegations that the town's garbage and recyclable carter has been cashing in big on residents' recyclables, we're curious how the recycling is done in your home.

With word on Thursday that a carter with contracts for the Towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven , bilking taxpayers in the meantime, we're curious who does your recycling and how.

Some take it to the grocery themselves, cashing in a dollar here and there while piling up soda cans under their kitchen sink. Some wait until they have a grocery cart full, fill up their trunk and cash in a little bit bigger.

Some people separate and let the town take their recyclables away, while surely there have to be a few out there who don't separate at all, opting to toss it all in the trash.

Others - such as one Patch commenter - lets strangers do their recycling for them, even before curbside pickup comes around.

"I see people go through my bottles to collect the nickel deposits," said one commenter, Lynn. "Most things I put out to trash that have a small value are gone before sun up."

How does your family recycle? Let us know in the comments.

I save it, put it in a nice cute little blue plastic bin and bring it to the curb every other week feeling good about my efforts. Then it gets picked up by a criminal enterprise, delivered to "alternate recycling facility" (also run by crooks) where they split the proceeds from steeling the Town's property. Glad I could help them out!

The garbage men apparantly ran over my curby can a few years back. I requested a new one, they sent me a sticker of a curby can & instructed me to stick it on to one of my own garbage cans. To this day, if I leave the lid on that can when I put it to the curb, they won't take it...

I do what I am to do ... orange bucket, but instead of a green bucket (which has been thrown and in bits) I get a large box from my husbands job. I can understand Johns comment since thats what they told me I could only get a free sticker, but that really doesnt help. I've seen some crazy things with even the garbage days!

That's bizarre because I have a recycle sticker on one of my pails and they always take it. But then again maybe the guys that pick up your trash can't read English? Go have a chat with them.

Bottom line: leave the lid off the stickered can and your recycling will disappear like magic - that's the word from Brookhaven Waste Management. I tried it at home and it works like a charm.

Assisted living is a good thing - they are not filled with drunken people, loud music....noise!!Read More Sit in a parking lot of an assisted living you will see that first they are not filled with cars. Honestly, having been through the system with parents and relatives, it is sad what happens to some of the people at assisted living or nursing homes. Relatives just drop them off and never visit. You'll get the occasional visit on maybe Christmas or Mothers / Fathers day, but for the most part they get very little foot traffic. And the people that work there tell the same story. But it is quiet. I would prefer an assisted living over a catering hall any day of the week.

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.
