Miller Place-Rocky Point

Miller Place Pharmacy Owner Discusses Prescription Drug Epidemic

When Bryan McCutcheon opened Echo Pharmacy in Miller Place in 2002, his intent was to build a community pharmacy with a mom-and-pop feel.

That feel is long gone. In its place: fear.

“All of my employees have expressed concern for their safety,” McCutcheon said, adding that the pharmacy has been robbed numerous times, including once at hammer point, as Long Island finds itself at the epicenter of a prescription drug abuse epidemic.

McCutcheon was a panelist Tuesday morning at a press conference as part of “Long Island United: Saving Lives--Call to Action,” a day of meetings, exhibitions and group discussions held in Melville meant to urge action against drug abuse.

LIPA: New Agreement Includes Option to Repower Port Jefferson Plant

The Long Island Power Authority approved a new agreement with National Grid on Tuesday that will extend its existing contract with the British utility company to purchase power for its customers over the next 15 years. The new agreement – called a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) – will replace the existing one that expires in May 2013.

LIPA decided to renegotiate the contract with National grid and exact a few changes. One change of particular interest to Port Jefferson village residents is an ability to repower existing plants, according to a statement released by Michael D. Hervey, Chief Operating Officer of the utility. According to Hervey’s statement, the new agreement “would establish procedures for the potential repowering of the Port Jefferson, Barrett (Island Park) and Northport steam plants...”

Three Village

Local Civics Join Forces

The Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook on Monday publicly welcomed the Three Village Civic Association into its membership via a merger.

Judy Shivak, longtime president of the Three Village Civic Association, presented a check of approximately $400 to Ron DiBiase, president of the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook, representing the last of its funds.

"I think it'll add to our diversity," DiBiase said of the merger. "It's good to have representation from all over the community. Many hands make light work."

The announcement comes during a membership campaign being conducted by the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook. Leaders of that organization, which has been around for 70 years, said this past summer that the organization would be seeking more members to help keep it thriving.

Tomorrow is the vote..vote NO NOW or our taxes are going to continue to sky rocket. Unless we doRead More something this town will continue to spiral down. More taxes aren't going to help. We need to cut expenses and get ourselves on a fiscally responsible plan.

Isn't that above the cap? Funny, when another news source mentioned 5 districts that are breakingRead More the cap they didn't mention Smithtown. Dn't worry, the district will bully and scare the parents into voting yes by threatening programs instead of doing what they need to do which is reduce administrative costs.

We can all make a statement one way or another when we vote. However, that statement should be madeRead More on a state level not the local level. Boards of Ed are powerless to do any real cost cutting. The state needs to take this on. We need real reform in Albany to reduce the ever increasing pensions and life long benefits that educators enjoy. Combine this with letting Albany decide salary increases for all educators and we can guaranty tax reductions over the next few years. Its that simple, Boards cannot do these. Lets get Albany to move on these NOW!
