Dam Breach at Sunken Meadow Re-routes Park Users
A project slated for the dam at Sunken Meadow State Park may need to be pushed along a little faster due to some damage from Superstorm Sandy.
The man–made dam, located by field three of the park, was breached after Sandy pounced on Long Island in late October. Grant monies from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund were slated before the storm to restore tidal flow. The first step in the project was to remove the dam.
County Dedicates Portion of Nicolls Road for Fallen Firefighter
The portion of Nicolls Road between Fox Hunt Road and Route 347 will now be known as "Lt. Joseph DiBernardo Memorial Road," and was dedicated at a ceremony on Monday led by Suffolk Legis. Kara Hahn.
Hahn, D-Setauket, introduced a measure in the county legislature over the summer to rename a 1.27-mile stretch of the road in honor of Joseph "Joey D" DiBernardo Jr., a FDNY lieutenant and former Setauket Fire Department volunteer who died last November from an accidental medication overdose.
"I can't think of a better way to honor his memory and legacy than for each passerby to think not just of his sacrifice but of the sacrifice of every brave man and woman who selflessly protect our lives and property every day," she said.

Rocky Point Voters Pass Capital Reserve Projects
Voters on Monday passed a referendum for three Capital Reserve Projects, including the installation of a new turf field, by a vote of 305-199.
"Tonight we see saw that the voters wanted this to go forward and we're happy that they wanted it to go forward and help us improve our instructional spaces, replace the track that needs to be replaced and to help add value to the track as well," said Superintendent Michael Ring.
Ring explained that the project will now go to the state for official approval. After it's approved by the state sometime in December or January, it will go out to bid.
