Memorial park honors the 53 Smithtown lives lost nine years ago today.

In 2005, the Smithtown Sept. 11 Memorial Park just off Main Street was dedicated to the 53 members of the community who lost their lives that day. Steel from the towers and plaques bearing the names of those lost were placed within the garden and in front of a cascading fountain.

The memorial was made possible by local government officials, corporations, individuals and the Chamber of Commerce. The Town of Smithtown Parks Department maintains the flowers in the memorial.

"It is a little serenity in this busy town," said Barbara Franco, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
